A. Read the text carefully and answer the questions provided! (30 poin)Global Warming

Global warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature. Though this

warming trend has been going on for a long time, its pace has significantly increased in the last

hundred years due to the burning of fossil fuels. As the human population has increased, so has

the volume of fossil fuels burned. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas, and burning them

causes what is known as the “greenhouse effect” in Earth’s atmosphere.

The greenhouse effect is when the Sun’s rays penetrate the atmosphere, but when that heat

is reflected off the surface cannot escape back into space. Gases produced by the burning of fossil

fuels prevent the heat from leaving the atmosphere. These greenhouse gasses are carbon dioxide,

chlorofluorocarbons, water vapor, methane, and nitrous oxide. The excess heat in the atmosphere

has caused the average global temperature to rise overtime, otherwise known as global warming.

Global warming has presented another issue called climate change. Sometimes these phrases

are used interchangeably, however, they are different. Climate change refers to changes in weather

patterns and growing seasons around the world. It also refers to sea level rise caused by the

expansion of warmer seas and melting ice sheets and glaciers. Global warming causes climate

change, which poses a serious threat to life on earth in the forms of widespread flooding and

extreme weather. Scientists continue to study global warming and its impact on Earth.

Jawaban dan Penjelasan

Berikut ini adalah pilihan jawaban terbaik dari pertanyaan diatas.

Jawaban:

1. The genre of the text is informational/expository. Its social function is to educate and inform readers about global warming, its causes, and its consequences.

2. Language features used in the text:

  a) Technical terms: "global warming," "greenhouse effect," "fossil fuels," "climate change," "carbon dioxide," "chlorofluorocarbons," "water vapor," "methane," "nitrous oxide," "average global temperature," "widespread flooding," "extreme weather."

  b) Cause-and-effect language: "due to the burning of fossil fuels," "causes what is known as the greenhouse effect," "The excess heat in the atmosphere has caused the average global temperature to rise over time," "Global warming causes climate change."

3. The topic sentence of the second paragraph is: "The greenhouse effect is when the Sun’s rays penetrate the atmosphere, but when that heat is reflected off the surface cannot escape back into space."

4. The topic of the last paragraph is the ongoing scientific study of global warming and its impact on Earth.

5. Fossil fuels are directly related to global warming. The burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, which contributes to the greenhouse effect and leads to global warming.

6. Global warming can endanger human life through its consequences, such as climate change. This can result in widespread flooding, extreme weather events, and disruptions to ecosystems and agriculture, leading to food shortages, displacement of populations, and increased health risks.

7. The gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels are carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, water vapor, methane, and nitrous oxide.

8. The word "it" refers to "climate change."

9. "Further, green (unroasted) coffee is one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world." (Active form): "Moreover, traders worldwide trade green (unroasted) coffee as one of the most traded agricultural commodities."

10. Answer varies based on personal experience. Here's an example:

Global warming is a concerning issue that I have witnessed firsthand. Over the years, I have noticed significant changes in the climate patterns in my region. Summers have become hotter and longer, with heatwaves becoming more frequent and intense. Winters, on the other hand, have become milder, with less snowfall and shorter freezing periods. These changes have had an impact on our environment and daily lives. Our agricultural practices have been affected, with shifts in growing seasons and an increased risk of droughts. Extreme weather events like hurricanes and floods have become more frequent, causing damage to infrastructure and posing risks to human safety. It is clear that global warming is not just a distant problem but a real and immediate threat that requires our attention and collective action to mitigate its effects and preserve our planet for future generations.
