"Majapahit War"

The Bubat War was a battle between the Sundanese Royal family and the Majapahit Royal army. The Bubat War can be said to be the cause of the downfall of Majapahit. The Bubat War began with King Hayam Wuruk's desire to marry a princess from the Sunda Kingdom named Diah Pitaloka Citraresmi. There are allegations that this marriage was driven by political reasons.

Because, only the Sunda region could not be conquered by Majapahit. The Sundanese consider this proposal as an Alliance Agreement. In 1357 AD, the entourage of the Sundanese king and his family and bodyguards left for Majapahit to accompany the princess to be married to Hayam Wuruk. King Hayam Wuruk had the desire to welcome guests at Bubat's sojourn, but this was opposed by Gajah Mada.

According to Gajah Mada, it is not appropriate for a king from a large kingdom to welcome his entourage by visiting Bubat's stopover. This was seen as degrading the rights and dignity of the Majapahit Kingdom. Because he was not welcomed, the king of the Sunda kingdom sent his prime minister named Patih Anepaken to meet the Majapahit party in the capital.

The arrival of Patih Anepaken and his entourage were welcomed by Gajah Mada. This is where the conflict starts to occur. Gajah Mada asked that the surrender of Princess Diah Pitaloka Citraresmi was a sign of the Sundanese kingdom's submission to Majapahit. Remember, Majapahit already controlled the archipelago except for the Sunda kingdom. Gajah Mada's statement made the group under the leadership of Patih Anepaken feel disappointed. Finally, they returned to Bubat's stopover.

A few days later, without the knowledge of Hayam Wuruk, Gajah Mada visited the Sundanese royal entourage at Bubat's stopover with a letter containing a request for the Sundanese kingdom to submit to Majapahit. The contents of the letter sparked the anger of the Sunda kingdom. Then, the conflict led to a very big battle between the entourage from the Sunda kingdom and the Majapahit troops.

Because, the difference in strength between the Sunda kingdom and the Majapahit kingdom made the Sunda kingdom overwhelmed and defeated by the Majapahit kingdom. The king of the Sunda kingdom died in the war. Seeing the soldiers fall, the wives of the soldiers carried out the acts of Balapati (suicide) and Princess Diah Pitaloka Citraresmi was no exception. Hayam Wuruk only learned about this news after the war ended. This made Hayam Wuruk experience a very deep sadness, considering that the daughter he wished for had also died.

Since then, the relationship between the kingdoms of Sunda and Majapahit was tenuous. The relationship between Hayam Wuruk and Gajah Mada was also tenuous. There is a big gap between the two figures who have advanced an empire as big as Majapahit. According to Kakawin Nagarakretagama, after Gajah Mada's departure, there were no more high-ranking officials who could match his skills and expertise.
