Dolphin ( Lumba-lumba)

Dolphins are marine mammals that belong to the family Delphinidae (oceanic dolphins) and Platanistidae and Iniidae (river dolphins). There are about 40 species of dolphins in the world, which live in all oceans and some large rivers. Dolphins have conical teeth that they use to catch fish, squid, and crustaceans. Dolphins also have the ability of echolocation, which is producing sound waves that bounce off prey and give information about its location, size, and shape.

Dolphins have a sleek body and a curved snout, which give them a smiling impression. Dolphins can jump as high as 20 feet (6.1 m) or more in the air, and some species can even spin and somersault over the waves. The largest dolphin is the killer whale (orca), which can grow to be over 30 feet (9 m) long. The smallest dolphin is the Maui dolphin, which is only five feet (1.5 m) long.

Dolphins are social animals that live in groups called pods. Dolphins can communicate with each other using sounds, body movements, and touch. Dolphins are also known as intelligent and curious animals, which can recognize themselves in the mirror, learn simple words and sentences, and even talk and understand each other over the phone. Dolphins also have the longest memory among other animals.

Dolphins are pregnant for nine to 16 months, depending on the species. Baby dolphins are born tail-first to prevent drowning. After the umbilical cord breaks, the mother dolphin must immediately bring her baby to the surface to breathe. Baby dolphins will nurse from their mothers for two to three years. Mother dolphins will also teach their babies how to swim, hunt, play, and survive.

Dolphins are beautiful and amazing animals, which deserve protection and respect from humans. Unfortunately, dolphins face many threats, such as illegal hunting, ocean pollution, climate change, fishing nets, and habitat loss. Some dolphin species are even endangered, such as the Amazon river dolphin (boto) and the South Asian river dolphin. We all should try to keep dolphins alive and happy in the wild.
