You might be thinking of antimatter. If a black hole that had formed from conventional matter were to swallow some antimatter, would its mass be reduced? This is a good question. I don’t know the answer, so what follows is only speculation (or rambling). In theory, neither kind of matter retains its identity in a singularity. But if somehow the antimatter could encounter an equal portion of matter inside the Schwarzschild radius before either had reached the singularity, they might convert to an equivalent amount of energy. The energy couldn’t leave the black hole, so externally the black hole would appear to retain the mass of both.
