Once upon a time, there lived a stonecutter who went every day to a great rock in the side of a big mountain and cut out slabs for gravestones or for houses.One day, the stonecutter carried a gravestone to the house of a rich man and saw all sorts of beautiful things there. Suddenly, his daily work seemed to grow harder and heavier and he said to himself, "If only I were a rich man, how happy I should be!". Then, a voice answered, "Your wish is heard; a rich man you shall be!" The stonecutter looked around but could see nobody. It was a mountain spirit’s voice. When he went home, he stood still with amazement. Instead of his wooden hut, he saw a stately palace filled with splendid furniture.
One morning, when he saw a prince in a little carriage passing by, he said, "Oh, if only I were a prince, how happy I should be!" Then, the mountain spirit granted what he wanted.
After that, he wished to be something else - a sun, a mountain and a cloud- and the mountain spirit always granted his wishes. Eventually, he wished to be a stone, and the stone he was. Proudly he stood, and neither the

heat of the sun nor the force of the rain could move him.
One day, he saw a stonecutter driving tools into his surface. He was very scared and cried, “Oh, if only I
were a man!" Then, a man he was. Though his life was simple, he had learned something. He did not want to be something or
somebody else.
