Sansiviera is a member of the Asparagacea family- a relative family of garden asparagus. The hard-leaves are well-suited to desert environment and has thick, succulent leaves for storing water, while the soft-leaves grow in tropical/subtropical environment and has wide and strap-like shape. As many cultivars are periclinal chimeras, they do not come true to type from leaf cuttings, and therefore must be propagated by rhizome division to retain the variegation.
