CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

A. She doesn't have a car, so she

EXPLANATION

A conditional sentenceconsists-If clauseandresult clause ( main clause ). In Bahasa, we call it, "Kalimat Pengandaian" or "Kalimat Bersyarat."

Conditional sentence is divided into four types :

ZERO CONDITIONAL

• The Zero Conditional is used to describe the Phenomenon, habit, and General truth.

Pattern :

If+S+verb¹ (s/es)+O , S+verb¹ (s/es)+O

Exp :

If it rains, the weather is so cold.

Fact

• It's a phenomenon. It is proven that the weather is cold when the rainy season comes.

FIRST CONDITIONAL

• The First Conditional is used to describe the truth in the present/future ( A planning will be probably done). However, the speaker will actualize his/her dream now, soon or later.

Pattern :

If +S+ verb¹ (s/es) + O, S+will/can+verb¹+O

Exp

If Mrs Edna has a car, she can go to Bogor more often.

Fact

It means that Mrs. Edna has an ability to go to Bogor more often because it's definitely, she will have a car someday or soon.

SECOND CONDITIONAL

• The second Conditional type is used to describe the untruth in the present / future. The speaker has an intention ( dream ) but he/she can't afford his/her dream comes true in the present/future (improbable)
• The finite verb of tobe "were" is used for both, singular and plural subjects.

Pattern:

If+S+verb²+O/C , S+would/could+verb¹+O/C

Exp :

If Mrs Edna had a car, she could go to Bogor more often

Fact

It uses the simple past form to reveal the improbability in the present. It means that Mrs. Edna doesn't have a car now, so she doesn't go to Bogor more often.

THIRD CONDITIONAL

• The Third Conditional is used to describe the untruth in the past. It reflects a regret for something that the speaker couldn't afford to do in the past.

Pattern :

If+S+Had+Verb³+O , S+Would/could+have+Verb³+O

Exp :

If Mrs Edna had had a car, she could have gone to Bogor more often

Fact

It reflects the regret for something that couldn't be reached in the past. It had already happened and the speaker couldn't get it back. It means that Mrs. Edna did not have a car, so she did not go to Bogor more often.
