EXPLANATION

Indirect speech (reported speech)merupakan pelaporan ulangulasan yang disampaikan oleh narasumber, tanpa mengubah makna tersirat dalam pemberitaan di waktu yang berbeda.

Perubahan noun clause verbbergantung pada bentukkata kerja pelaporannya { reporting verb } dan jenis informasi yg disampaikan.

Jika reporting verb-nya berbentuk lampau { said, told, asked }, noun clause verbpada pernyataan mengalamibackshift :

• Simple present=>Simple past
• Simple past=>Past perfect
• Present perfect=>Past perfect
• Simple future =>Present conditional
• Present continuous=>Past continuous
• Past continuous=>Past perfect continuous

Ini dikecualikanjika pernyataan yang disampaikan merupakaninformasi faktual,tidak mengalamibackshift meskipun reporting verb-nya bentuk lampau.

ELABORATION

1. "You should take a few days off ", the manager said.

▶We can't change modals "should" into a past form.

▶The involved person is the third person "he."

If there is no person addressed for, it should be written in the first person "I" in the reported speech.

So, the reported speech will be :

The manager said that he should take a few days off.

2 "I've been working in this company for ten years", Ann told them.

▶Reporting verb => told

So, the reported speech will be :

Ann said that she had been working in that company for ten years.

3 "I must notify the police because some important documents have gone missing", Mr Jones explained.

▶We can't change modal verbs into a past form but we can change another verbs.

So, the reported speech will be :

Mr Jones explained that he must notify the police because some important documents had gone missing.

4. " When are you going to look for a permanent post?" my parents keep asking me.

▶Reporting verb => keep asking

▶If the reporting verb uses the simple present, the noun clause verb is not changed.

So, the reported speech will be :

My parents keep asking me when I am going to look for a permanent post.
