Central StationWhether you have just arrived or are leaving, the
atmosphere at Central Station surely gives the feeling of
being in Amsterdam. Arrivals are welcomed and departing
visitors are sent off by the many musicians, fire-spitters and
tramps that hang around the station
The station blocks the clear view over the harbor. Until
the station was built, amsterdammers had enjoyed a
charming view of the sail, flags and smoke from the odd
steamer. P.HJ. Cuypers, the architect of the station
deliberately built it to prevent the railway line passing
through the heart of the city
The design of the building with its mixture of gothic and
Dutch renaissance styles has been critized, but the intention
of welcoming travelers through a grand entrance into the city
of amsterdam has definitely succeeded.
The arms of the state has been sculptured in the center of
the front gable with a lion on each side. Underneath this, the
coat of arms of towns such as Berlin, St. Petersburg and Paris
(14 in total) can be seen. All these cities can be reached by
the railway-connection
