Once upon a time, there was a very poor man. He was too poor to provide food fos his wife and many children. Accordingly, he left home and worked for the king of a distant land.
Years passed and he left that it was time to return to his family. He came to the king and said, "l have served you so long. It is time for me to go home. Pay me what you owe me for my work." However, the king did not give him money. He said, "I give you something that is more precious that money. Here is a table. It will serve you food by saying 'Table, set yourself'. It is enough to provide food for all your family." The man was so happy and soon he left the palace to his family.
Because the distance was so far, he stopped at an inn and spent a night there. Foolishly, he showed the power of the table to the innkeeper who stared in infascination at how the table served the food. The Devil came to the innkeeper and he planned to steal the table so serve his guest delicious food without spending any money. He said, "I can make a lot of money with it" . That night, the innkeeper stole the table and substituted an identical table. Early in the morning the man loaded the table on his back and hurried home to his wife and children.
After the long and tiring trip, the man arrived home and saw his wife and
children. He immediately wanted to show the power of the table. He said, "We will not go hungry again. The king gave me this table to serve us delicious food." Then, he said, "Table, set yourself". The man was very disappointed because nothing appeared on the table. His wife became upset. She thought that he wanted to fool her about the magic of the table rather than give money after leaving the home for such a long time.
The wife said, "Go to the king and ask him for money instead. We don't need the table." The man went to the King again and told him what had happened. The king realised that somebody had stolen the table. He asked, "Where did you stop on the way? The man answered, " spent the night at the inn in the middle
of my way home. The King said again, " I've heard that innkeeper is going to retire trom business, he has become so rich." "You'd better hurry there as fast as you can, betore he leaves town."
"Take these pincers," ordered the king. "Use them on that innkeeper until he gives back the table. Soon, he went to the innkeeper to ask for the table. When the innkeeper was sore and black and blue from the pincers, he gave back the table.
After that there were prosperous days indeed for the king's laborer. Whenever he children were hungry, he would say "Table, set yourself," and immediately the table would be full of the most delicious food.
As for the pincers, they proved to be quite as useful as the other gift he
received from the king. Whenever the children were naughty, he had only to
glance in the direction of those pincers. The children would immediately behave
as they should.​​
