PAST SIMPLE

It was just before midnight on October 31, last year, Susan Lee drove home after visiting her sister. The road was clear and she drove carefully. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a young man stepped out infront of her. He wore a dark-coloured raincoat and carrying a backpack. Susan stepped hard on the brake pedal, but it was too late.

She got out of the car but to her surprise, there was nobody there. While she looked under the car, she felta cool wind on her face and a stranger presence thatsent shivers down her spine. She still lookedunder the car when a carstopped behind her. The car driver, a middle-aged man, walkedup to her andaskedher if sheneeded help to start her car. Then Susan told him what had happened. He not seemedsurprise when shetold him about the young man.

“In October 1979, there was a fatal accident on this road, when a hitchhiker was runover. You are not the first to have seen his ghost here,” he said in mysterious tone.
