Indirect Speech / Reported Speech, dalam bahasa Indonesia artinya adalah kalimat tidak langsung. Perubahan kalimat dari Direct Speech menjadi Reported Speech memiliki beberapa aturan:

1) Imperative Speech:

My mother said, "don't open that door!"

My mother said not to open that door.

Imperative: “Come here.” Reported Speech: She told me to come here. So, we use “ask/tell + to + verb” to report a command or imperative.

2) Present Tense:

The boy said, "I have a new apartment."

The boy said that he had a new apartment.

She said, "She is a dancer."

She said (that) She was a dancer.

Jika kalimat ini berbentuk kebenaran umum, maka akan lebih sesuai

She said (that) She is a dancer.

3) Past Tense:

My mother said, "You brother did his homework last night."

My mother said (that) my brother had done his homework previous night.

My friend said, "I was late."

My friend said that she had been late.

4) Present Perfect Tense:

He asked me,"have you been to spain?"

He asked me if I had been to spain.

5) Modals:

He said, "You must try my home-made wine!"

He said that you had to try his home-made wine.

You asked me, "Can you come?"

You asked me if / whether I could come.

6) Past Continuous Tense

Bentuk Past Continuous tense berubah menjadi Past Perfect Continuous ketika kita mengubah Direct speech-nya menjadi Reported / indirect speech. Kata kerja Helping dari Past continuous 'was' & 'were' akan berubah menjadi 'had been' dengan bentuk Participle (bentuk pertama) dari Verb dan ING.

Kita tidak pernah mengubah waktu ke masa lampau (backshift) saat kata asli yang digunakan adalah:

past perfect.

could.

might.

would.

should
