Here are the answers for the role play task between Takuya, the Japanese student and Rico the Indonesian student below:
- a. Visiting the place for worship
Takuya: Rico, I want to have a Friday mass prayer, is there a mosque nearby?
Rico: Oh, sure, I didn't know you are Moslem, mate. It's on the corner of that streets, opposite the supermarket.
T: I see, yeah, I'm still new, what should I do when I enter the mosque? shall I say certain verses or anything?
R: No, just have your wudhu and do Tahiyatul Masjid prayer (two rakaat) and sit plus listen to the sermon. Come with me later then. I'll be going there too.
T: Oh, I thought you were Christian, judging by your name. Sorry.
R: No worries, mate. My name does sound un-islamic, hehe.
- b. Introduction
T: Oh yes, any certain custom regarding the introduction in social convention at the mosque, especially when I am introduced to others for the first time?
R: Hmm, are referring to the one at the mosque after the Mass Prayer?
T: Well, is there any of such?
R: There is, but I don't usually join them.
T: Oh OK then, I need to see the vicar or imam for my research on Indonesian Moslem Boarding school which has been on the news lately due to the child molester case.
R: Oh, OK, well, just say hi and shake hands basically or if you don't want to do so, just raise your hand and place your palms each other as a replacement while greeting.
T: Ah, I see, that's not so hard to do.
- c. Taking pictures
T: Oh yes, when I pay a visit at the Islamic boarding school later, can I take pictures of the people or students there?
R: Yeah, should not be a big deal.
T: Won't they mind?
R: Nay, but just for precaution, ask for their permission first.
- d. Holiday
T: Oh yes, what is the best place to go on holiday in East Java? I'm bored with Bali. I want somewhere different for my holiday destination?
R: Hmm, have you been to Bromo or virgin lake in Lumajang?
T: No not really, what can I see there?
R: Well, Bromo is a mountain range with deserts around it while the lake is hidden but people say it is beautiful. I'll take you there as I wonder myself.
T: So, you've never been there too?
R: Well only for the lake. I have been to Bromo twice.
T: Sounds interesting.
- Eating out
T: Oh one last thing, what shall I do if someone ask me out for a dinner?
R: You mean like a date?
T: No, no not a date, just formal dinner or eating out.
R: Ah, well, don't worry, if someone invites you for that, just bring yourself, they will be paying for you. If you feel bad because you feel like only taking advantage of your colleagues who invite you, just offer them to join the payment, at least for your own food, usually they will refuse it.
T: Ah, thank you, Rico. That's quite neat.
