Behind their amazing appearance, butterflies have to undergo a long process to morph from a caterpillar called metamorphosis.The life cycle of a butterfly begins when a hungry caterpillar hatches from an egg laid by adult female butterflies. The caterpillar, often known as a larva, feeds on green foliage that helps it grow longer, bigger, and plumper. At a specific age, it molts and stops eating then hangs upside down and makes itself a cocoon or chrysalis.

The caterpillar releases enzymes to digest itself inside the cocoon, leaving imaginal discs that will develop into a butterfly. At this phase, the chrysalis contains caterpillar juice that is rich of protein to continue the metamorphosis. The discs then forms antennae, legs, wings, and other features. The fully-formed butterfly emerges from the cocoon and dries itself before flying for the first time.
