In 1981, Jessica Hamilton was unable to find a job in London. She was about to return to the family cottage in the country. Her money almost ran out. On her last day, depressed, she was alone in the flat where she had been staying with friends, playing their piano.

After a while, Jessica heard the sound of a cello being played solo in the flat directly above her. She listened and became convinced she knew that tone. When she was eleven, she had studied the cello for two years, and had made a friend who was ten at that time. They had gradually drifted apart because his father got a promotion in another country. It was ten years old since they had last met. She decided to go up stairs and knock on the door. It was opened by her best friend, Sue. She was twenty-two years old and a successful cellist. Jessica told her wish to stay in London. Then Sue agreed that she should stay in her flat.

Getting a job as a piano teacher, Jessica thanked Sue and helped Sue pay the flat utilities. Jessica stayed with Sue for three years. Married by a rich man, Sue moved to her husband's big house. However, they remained close friends. When Jessica married, Sue helped her prepare her wedding ceremony. To keep their good relationship, they met once a week.
