Jawaban:
Once upon a time, there lived a woman with two daughters in a small village. The first was her stepdaughter named Bawang, and the younger one was named Kesuna. They had very opposite traits. Bawang was diligent and smart and always helped her mother, while Kesuna was lazy and only cared about preening and dressing up.
One day, their mother asked Bawang and Kesuna to crush the rice. "My dear daughters, come here. I want to go to the market to buy something, so please crush this rice," she said. "OK, Mom," replied Bawang. "Don't worry, Mom. I will finish it before you get back from the market," added Kesuna. "Kesuna, let's take the rice; it's so heavy," said Bawang. "No, no, no. You can do it yourself," answered Kesuna. "Kesuna, I'll take the rice. Now, let's crush it together," Bawang suggested.
However, Kesuna was busy putting on makeup and refused to help, so Bawang did all the work alone. After finishing, Bawang went to the river to wash the clothes and get water. Meanwhile, Kesuna was tricking Bawang. She took a handful of rice and poured it into her body, pretending she crushed the rice alone.
A few minutes later, their mother came back and found Kesuna full of dust and rice. "Why did you work alone? Where's Bawang?" she asked. "Mom, as you can see, I crushed the rice alone. Meanwhile, Bawang went to the river to take a bath. She didn't want to help me, Mom," answered Kesuna. Her mother believed Kesuna's story and became angry.
While Bawang was scrubbing and washing the clothes, some of her mother and sister's clothes were washed away by the river. Bawang was panicked and crying, looking for the clothes. She asked for help from the fish and crab she met along the river, but they didn't see the clothes. Then she met an old lady who watched her.
"Don't be afraid, Bawang. I know you're tired from looking for your mother's clothes," said the old lady. She smiled and gave Bawang the clothes of her mother and sister. Bawang was so happy and thankful to the old lady. The old lady then asked Bawang to take a pumpkin. "Take it and you can open it at home. Your mother and sister have been waiting for you," said the old lady.
Without thinking twice, Bawang went home soon. After arriving, she opened the pumpkin and was surprised to find a lot of jewelry, including necklaces, diamonds, gold, and rings. Kesuna saw the jewelry and became jealous. She asked Bawang where she got it, and Bawang, being kind and naive, told her everything.
As soon as she could, Kesuna went to the river to meet the old lady and take a pumpkin, hoping to get more jewelry. After arriving home, Kesuna opened the pumpkin and found a snake instead. She screamed in pain and cried for help.
