The research shows that smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. If we smoke five cigarettes a day, we are six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a nonsmoker. (2) Additionally, children who breathe secondhand smoke can have respiratory problems and lung cancer. So, smoking in your own homes will cause problems for your children because their lungs are still developing. If you smoke around your children or they are exposed to secondhand smoke in other places, they may be in more danger than you realize (3) Smoking provides tobacco companies with opportunities to make money from smoking habit. However, it is detrimental to our health. (4) Before deciding to smoke, it is better to look at the facts. According to Howard J. Shaffer, PhD, Addiction Medicine, Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 443,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure, that is more than alcohol, cocaine, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fire, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) combined. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. ​
