Having created a great number of poems, essays, and fictions for about fifty years, Sapardi Djoko Damono is known as one of Indonesian greatest poets.Sapardi was born in Solo on 20 March 1940. He spent his childhood in his hometown. He was keen on reading and started reading poems when he was in Junior High School.
After high school, he continued his education at the Faculty of Literature in Gajah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Sapardi was inspired by a lot of things, including his youth in the academic life in writing his poems.
Sapardi received a lot of awards for his great literature work. He was awarded the SEA Write Award from Thailand in 1986 and won the Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa Literary Award in 2004.
