Through their pollination of all sorts of monoculture crops, such as almonds in California, they play a vital role in fertilizing the flowers that provide the fruit and seeds so necessary for large-scale agriculture to operate successfully in a populous world. They also assist nature by cross-fertilizing wild plants. There is an interesting history connected with the domestic honey bee. Native to both the Middle East and South-East Asia, including the Philippines. it was taken to the New World during the period of colonization. After its introduction to North America in colonial times it became widespread by the mid-1800s. In fact, it became so common that 100 years ago almost half of all households kept two or three hives in their backyards, extracting honey when convenient. In recent years, there has been widespread concem at the catastrophic decline of the European honey bee. A phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has widely decimated hives, leading not only to concern about honey production and supply but also to concern about the reliable pollination of agricultural crops and wild flowers. The reason for CCD is not fully understood but it may be connected with bees having a monoculture diet, with unreliable weather or with a number of other factors. Arguably connected with the disorder is the presence of a small parasitic mite called Varma destructor, shown to be present in a number of weakened or dying hives.
