Definition of the Present Continuous Tense

present continuous tense is a form of tense used to express that an action is taking place for a certain time at the present time. This form shows that the action occurs before (begins before), during (is in progress at the present), and continues after (continues after) time or other actions.

Aunt Christine is ..... up the car while Scott looks for his new leather coat. (Warm)

Present Continuous Tense formula

In applying it in sentences, you need to remember the formula below.

Positive form: Subject + be (am / is / are) + verb (-ing) + ...

Negative form: Subject + be (am / is / are) + not + verb (-ing) + ...

Interrogative form: Be (am / is / are) + subject + verb (-ing) +…?

Use of the Tense

As we already know, the present continuous tense is a tense used to describe an ongoing state. However, in its use there are several conditions that you need to know.

To show an action that is ongoing and happening now. Example:

It is .... and I am ..... for my mother to pick me up. (Rain-wait)

I am .... this letter to express my feelings to you. (Writer)

She is ... in the rain. (Dance)

To discuss the action that took place around the time of the conversation. Example:

To talk about plans that are certain to happen in the near future. Example:

Given that the present continuous tense is not only used to indicate events that are taking place now but also in the near future, it is very important to pay attention to the use of adverbs of time. Generally, the following time adverbs are used in the present continuous tense:

Verbs that cannot be used in the present continuous tense

Do you know? Not all verbs can be used in this tense, you know! This is because the verb denotes a state or situation that we do not expect to change and does not describe an action or action. These verbs are better known as stative verbs. Here's an example of a static verb:

Verbs that denote feelings and emotions: love, prefer, hate, like, appreciate, want, dislike.

Verbs denoting the use of the senses: hear, taste, smell, see.

Verbs that express knowledge, opinion, and belief: think, believe, understand, know, recognize.

Verbs denoting ownership: own, have, possess, belong.

Other static verbs: seem, be, exist, need, cost.

Perhaps you are wondering why the word "love" cannot be used as a verb in this tense? Even though maybe you often hear the sentence "I'm loving it!" In grammar structure, this sentence is actually wrong because it contains stative verbs. However, this counts as a style only and is informal. You will often find this in conversations around only close people. You will never find this sentence in formal or business communications.​
