Apa itu clause? Clause adalah sejumlah kata yang menjadi bagian dari sebuah kalimat yang mengandung makna sendiri secara penuh. Sebuah clause setidaknya memiliki: subjek + predikat

Adjective (kata sifat) adalah kata yang berfungsi menambah kejelasan terhadap sebuah noun (kata benda) atau pronoun (kata ganti), dengan  menambahkan karakteristik benda tersebut (entah sifatnya, kondisinya, kualitasnya, ukurannya, dst)

Adjective clause adalah clause (jadi dia terdiri dari beberapa kata yang mengandung makna lengkap) yang berfungsi memperjelas noun atau pronoun dalam kalimat. Kalau bagian adjective clause ini dibuang, yang tersisa masih merupakan kalimat lengkap, karena sifatnya hanya memperjelas noun atau pronoun di kalimat tersebut.

Contoh soal 1: This is the town where I was born and grown up.

Adjective clause di sini "Where I was born and grown up" secara terpisah mempunya makna yang penuh. Tapi di sini dia berfungsi menjelaskan the town (noun). Town/kota yang mana? Yaitu kota di mana saya lahir dan bertumbuh.

Jika bagian itu kita buang, maka tersisa "This is the town", ini merupakan kalimat yang utuh (Ini adalah kotanya, atau Ini adalah kota tersebut)

Contoh soal 6: During the war in the 1940's many people who lived in Java were killed.

Adjective clause di sini adalah who lived in Java. Fungsinya di sini adalah memperjelas "people" (people yang mana?, yaitu people/orang yang tinggal di Jawa"

Kalau bagian adjective clause ini kita buang, tersisa: "During the war in the 1940's many people were killed".

Ini adalah sebuah kalimat yang lengkap/komplit, karena adjective clause -nya cuma menembah kejelasan tentang "people" tadi.
