7. Richard asked if Chloe would like to go shopping. He also wondered if she wanted to go to the beach.

Correlative conjunctionataupaired conjunctionadalah sepasang konjungsi yang selaludigunakan bersamaan. Correlative conjunction digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua kata/frasa/independent clause yang kedudukan gramatikalnya setara (misalnya noundannoun).

Beberapa correlative conjunction yang umum digunakan adalah:

• both ... and ...
• not only ... but also ...
• either ... or ...
• neither ... nor ...
• just as ... so ...
• not ... but ...
• whether ... or ...

Explication

1. Not only ... but also ...  

Correlative conjunctionini digunakan untuk menggabungkan duaitemdanmenekankan item terakhiryang biasanyaberlawanan dengan pengetahuan atau harapan pembicara.

Contoh:

The girl is not only pretty but also smart. (Pembicara terkejut bahwa gadis cantik juga pintar).

2.  Neither ... nor ...

Correlative conjuction ini digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa dua pilihan/item tidak tersedia.

Contoh:

I have neither a car nor a motorcycle. (Pembicara tidak mempunyai keduanya).

3. Either ... or ...

Kita menggunakan either ... or ... ketika kita memberikan dua pilihandan hanya salah satu dari keduaitem tersebut yang bisa dipilih.

Contoh:

The students can use pens with either black or blue ink. They can't use pens with green ink.

4. Just as ... so ...

Correlative conjunctionini digunakan untuk menggabungkandua independent clauseyang menyatakan hal yangmirip.

Contoh:

Just as Indonesians eat rice, so do Germans eat potatoes.

Biasanya klausa sesudah somengalamiinversi (auxiliary verbnya diletakkan sebelum subjek) tapi jika informal, boleh tidak inversi.

Just as Indonesians eat rice, so Germans eat potatoes.

5. Both ... and ...

Kita menggunakan both ... and ...untuk menekankan bahwa duaitem dalam kalimat itu benar adanya. Fungsi both ... and ...sebenarnya sama denganand, bedanya dalam penekanan.

Bandingkan:

He is tall and handsome.

He is bothtalland handsome.

Jika both ... and ... digunakan dalam subjek, subjek selalu menjadi plural, maka kata kerjanya juga plural. Pada subjek dengan correlative conjunction lainnya kata kerja mengikuti subjek terakhir.

Contoh:

BothAmyandSuziearehighschoolstudents.

EitherAmy orSuzie is ahighschoolstudent.

6. Not ... but ...

Correlative conjunctionini digunakan ketika kita ingin menyatakan dua hal yangbertentangan. Itempertama dalamnegatifdan penekanan padaitem kedua.

Contoh:

I was not surprised but excited to hear the news.

7. If/whether ... or ...

Kita menggunakan whether ... or ... untuk menyatakan keraguan atau mempertanyakan antara dua pilihan.

Contoh:

I don't know to wear whether the red dress or the black dress for the party.
