Cara Membuat Superlatives

Sama seperti comparatives, ada tiga cara untuk membuat superlative adjectives:

Adjectives yang panjang (dua suku kata atau lebih) – tambahkan the most di depan adjective-nya. Contohnya,

• She is the most interesting lecturer at the college.
• It’s the most difficult university to get into
• These are the most useful books you need to prepare for the exam.

Adjectives yang pendek (satu suku kata) – tambahkan –est ke adjective-nya dan tambahkan the di depannya. Contohnya,

• This is the biggest campus in the city.
• What was the toughest exam you’ve ever done?
• He got the highest grades in my class last year.

Pengecualian!

Jika dua huruf terakhir dari adjective-nya adalah huruf hidup yang diikuti huruf konsonan, maka kita harus menggandakan huruf konsonannya. Contohnya,

• hot – hottest
• Thin – thinnest

Adjectives dengan dua suku kata yang berakhiran -y – ganti akhiran -y tersebut dengan -i dan tambahkan -est, lalu awali superlative-nya dengan kata the. Contohnya,

• Going to university was the happiest period of my life.
• The first year was the easiest part of college. Then it got harder.
