Reported speech/indirect speech adalah kalimat berita, ungkapan melaporkan ulang apa yang telah disampaikan narasumber kepada orang lain tanpa mengubah informasi tersirat.

Hal² yang diperhatikan dalam merubah direct speech ke reported speech adalah

~ Perhatikan jenis kalimatnya, apakah termasuk afirmasi, tanya dan imperatif (saran, nasihat, larangan, perintah)

~ Perhatikan sudut pandangnya (point of view)

~ Perhatikan jenis reporting verb-nya; bentuk PAST [told, asked, warned] atau PRESENT [tell, ask, warn].

➡ Jika reporting verb berbentuk "Present simple, Present perfect, Future", noun clause verb tidak mengalami perubahan tenses.

➡ Sebaliknya, jika reporting verb berbentuk past {said, told, asked, warned}, noun clause verb mengalami backshift.

Contoh:

The police said, "Don't park your car here!"

➡ The police forbade me to park my car there.

Jenis kalimat langsungnya adalah larangan. Maka daripada itu, reporting verb menggunakan "forbade" atau bisa menggunakan "warned" untuk menekankan maksudnya.
