Definition of Simple Past Tense

The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk about things that happened or existed before now.

Examples:

Verbal Simple Past Tense Sentence:

• (+) The Doctor went to the hospital last monday.
• (-) The Doctor did not go to the hospital last monday.
• (?) Did the Doctor go to the hospital last monday?

Nominal Simple Past Tense Sentence:

• (+) He was a doctor.
• (-) He was not a doctor.
• (?) Was he a doctor?

The difference between Simple Past Tense & Past Continuous Tense:

• Simple past tense, states that an action was done or occurred in the past.
• Past continuous tense, states that an action was happening at a certain time in the past. The action had started but was not finished at that time.
