The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) decided to abolish the national exams (UN) and equivalency examinations in 2021. This decision is contained in the Circular (SE) of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 1 of 2021 concerning the Elimination of National Examinations and Equality Exams and Implementation of School Exams in Emergency Times Spread of Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19). The Circular Letter was signed by Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Anwar Makarim on February 1, 2021 and addressed to governors, regents and mayors throughout Indonesia.

In the Circular of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 1 of 2021, it is stated that the decision to abolish the National Examination and the equivalence test is related to the increasing spread of Covid-19 so that it is necessary to take responsive steps that prioritize the physical and mental safety and health of students, educators, and education personnel. With the elimination of the National Examination and the 2021 equivalence exam, the National Examination and equivalency examinations are not a requirement for graduation or selection to enter a higher education level.

Meanwhile, there are three things that are requirements for passing students from educational units / programs. First, students complete a learning program during the Covid-19 pandemic as evidenced by a report card every semester. Second, students get a minimum good attitude / behavior score. Third, take the exam organized by the Education unit.

Exams held by educational units (school exams) as determinants of student graduation can be carried out in the form of portfolios, assignments, offline or online tests, and / or other forms of assessment activities determined by the education unit. The portfolio is in the form of evaluation of report card scores, attitudes / behavior values, and previous achievements, such as awards, competition results, and so on.
