Mother is a song that tells of John Lennon's cries for his father and mother who abandoned him as a child. The father, Alf, left the family when John was a baby. The mother, Julia, does not live with her son, although they are on good terms. He was hit by a car on July 15, 1958 by a drunken cop named Eric Clague, when John was 17 years old. He expressed the loss of his parents with the lyrics: "Mother, you own me / but I never had you"; "Dad, you left me / but I never left you".
