Sangkuriang

Once upon a time, in West Java, there lived a wise king who had a beautiful and smart daughter. Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She liked weaving so much. Many other kings wanted to marry her. But, Dayang Sumbi didn’t want that. So, she went to a deep forest.

One day, she was weaving cloth. Suddenly, one of her tools fell to the ground. She was very tired and lazy to take it.  Then she just shouted out loud. “Oh, I fell on my needle, but I'm too lazy to take it. Can anybody take the needle for me? I will give you a special present. If you are a woman, I'll consider you as my sister. But if you are a man, I'll marry you.”

Suddenly, a male dog named Tumang came and brought her tool. Dayang Sumbi was very surprised and regretted her words. But she had to fulfill her promise to marry Tumang. Then they lived happily in a small village.

Several months later, Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a son, and named him Sangkuriang. He was a handsome and healthy boy. Sangkuriang liked hunting very much. He often went hunting in the woods using his arrow, and Tumang was always with him.

One day, Dayang Sumbi wanted to eat a deer's heart. “Sangkuriang, will you hunt for a deer today? I want to eat a deer’s heart so much” asked Dayang Sumbi.

“Of course, mom. Whatever you want, I will give it to you.” Replied Sangkuriang. “Tumang, where are you? Come on, we have to hunt for a deer.”

Then Sangkuriang went to the woods with his arrow and his faithful dog. Sangkuriang wanted to give a deer’s heart to his mother, but he couldn't find any deer. Desperately, he took an arrow and shot Tumang. Then, he took Tumang’s heart for his mother, without knowing that Tumang was his father.

“I’m home.”

“Where is Tumang? I see you hunting with him.”

“I don’t know. Maybe he’s still outside. Here is the meat for our dinner.”

“Okay, wait here. I’ll cook this meat”

After Dayang Sumbi cooked the meat, they ate it. But, Dayang Sumbi still didn’t know if the meat that she ate was Tumang.

“Why don’t Tumang come back here?”

“I.... I don't know.”

“Don’t lie to me. I know that you know about that.”

“I’m sorry, mom. I killed him.”

“You killed him? Do you know what you have done?! Tumang was your father!” said Dayang Sumbi, full of anger. She hit Sangkuriang’s head with a wooden spoon and left a scar on his head. “Get out of here and don’t ever come here again!" yelled her. Them, Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.

Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He wandered everywhere. One day he stopped at his own village without realizing it. There he met Dayang Sumbi. At the time Dayang Sumbi was given eternal beauty by God, so she stayed young forever. Both of them didn’t know each other. So they fell in love and decided to marry.

But then Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head. She was very shocked. She knew that Sangkuriang was his son. It was impossible for them to marry. She already told him that she was his mother, but he didn’t believe that. Sangkuriang wished that they married soon. So Dayang Sumbi gave him a very difficult condition

“Sangkuriang, if you want to marry me. I have a condition for you. I want you to build a lake and a big boat in one night.  Can you do that?”

“That’s easy! I will do anything for you!”. Sangkuriang agreed. He took her challenge without any doubt. After the sunset, he went to the hill. He called many genies to help him. He commanded the genies to build a lake and make a big boat from the trees. In a short time, Sangkuriang and his genies almost finished their work

Dayang Sumbi realized that Sangkuriang would finish her order. She immediately asked all the women in the village to make light in the east. The genie thought that it was already dawn. It was time for them to leave and leave Sangkuriang alone. Without their help, Sangkuriang couldn’t finish building the lake and the big boat.

Sangkuriang was so angry. He failed to marry Dayang Sumbi. He kicked the unfinished boat with all of his power upsides down and it turned into a mountain called “Tangkuban Perahu”, until now. Tangkuban means flipped, and Perahu means ship.

The moral value of this story is to think before act, no matter what happens, you always have to be an honest person. Because every time you lie, you will continue to lie to cover up your lies.
