The condition of the sea in Indonesia is increasingly apprehensive. This is caused by pollution that occurs in our seas. Pollution that occurs in the sea is caused, among other things, by exposure to high levels of microplastics at sea. In addition, oil spills, heavy metals, marine microbiological pollution, pesticides, and household waste also contribute to the marine pollution process. There must be strategic efforts made by all parties related to this matter.

Based on data from the Oceanographic Research Center (P2O) of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), it is estimated that currently the number of microplastics in Indonesian seawater is in the range of 30 to 960 particles/liter. According to M. Reza Cordova, a researcher from the institute, the amount of microplastics in Indonesian seas is the same as the amount of microplastics found in the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. However, it is also lower when compared to microplastics on the China Coast, the California Coast, and the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

As for pollution from oil spills, it is usually caused by humans, for example tanker accidents or accidents in the process of drilling oil wells. Heavy metal pollution can occur due to the indiscriminate disposal of industrial waste into rivers so that the heavy metals that are carried are carried to the sea. Marine microbiological pollution relates to contamination caused by viruses, pathogenic bacteria, or parasites carried by river airflow. If there are plantations or rice fields that are in the river flow using an irrigation system and spraying the crops with pesticides so that they are carried into the sea, as well as household waste, this also contributes to the cause of the expansion of the Indonesian seas.

Efforts that can be made to overcome the problem of pollution is to increase awareness of the love of the sea. All human activities must be given more attention so as not to damage the environment. Thus, the deplorable sea conditions can be overcome by humans as users as well as those in charge of the environment.
