Reported speechmerupakan perubahan suatu kalimat langsung atau direct speech menjadi kalimat tidak langsung atauindirect speech. Reported speech sendiri biasanya digunakan untuk menyampaikan ulang apa yang dikatakan oleh orang lain. Perkataan atau direct speech yang diubah ke dalam reported speech dapat berupa statement atau pernyataan, perintah atau ajakan (imperative), atau pertanyaan (yes-or-no question), serta pertanyaan menyangkut suatu informasi.

Tidak seperti saat kita mempelajari tenses, rumus khusus untuk mengubah kalimat langsung menjadi tidak langsung. Namun beberapa kemudian dapat dilakukan untuk mengubah kalimat langsung menjadi tak langsung, di antaranya adalah:

• Menghilangkan tanda kutip
• Mengubah huruf kapital pada awal kalimat langsung menjadi huruf kecil
• Menggunakan ‘that’, whether or not or not atau if, terutama untuk pertanyaan yes/no
• Mengubah time reference
