Someone has stolen a famous painting from Lady Winter's bedroom. Police Inspector Davis arrives to question Lady Winter.
"When did you last see the painting?" he asks Lady Winter.
"This morning," Lady Winter replies. "When I woke up this morning, the painting was on the wall. I usually leave my bedroom door open, but this morning I locked it instead. I put the key in the kitchen. Then James, my driver, drove me to a restaurant for lunch. James waited outside for me. I returned at 2 pm and went to my bedroom. The door was open and the painting wasn't there."
"Who's got a key to your bedroom?" asks Inspector Davis.
"My housekeeper, Mrs. Jones, and me," replies Lady Winter.
Inspector Davis goes to the kitchen to talk to Lady Winter's employees.
"I didn't come to work this morning. I went fishing," says Tom, the gardener. "Mrs. Jones must be the thief. She was alone in the house."
"That's a lie!" shouts Mrs. Jones. "I saw Tom in the house this morning. He was leaving the kitchen and walking upstairs to the bedrooms."
"I couldn't be the thief!" shouts Tom. "The bedroom door wasn't opened and I haven't got a key!"
"Now I know who the thief is", says Inspector Davis, smiling.
