Jika pada active voicesubyek kalimat adalah pelaku aksi atau disebutagent, dalam passive voicesubyek kalimat adalah penerima aksi atau dalam istilah linguistik disebutpatient (obyek langsung) atau recipient (obyek tidak langsung) dalam kalimat ditransitive.

Konstruksi kalimat aktif :

agent + tensed verb + patient

Konstruksi kalimat pasif:

patient + tensed be + past participle of verb (+ by agent)

Contoh:

Active: She swept the floor just now.

Passive: The floor was swept (by her) just now.

• she ➠ agent
• swept ➠ pastform of the verbsweep
• the floor ➠ patient
• was ➠ past form of be
• swept ➠ past participle form of the verb sweep

Note: by agenttidak perlu digunakan jikaagentberupapronoun (I, you, he, someone, dll.)
