Pembahasan

Degrees of comparison adalah bentuk kata yang digunakan untuk menyatakan tingkat perbandingan. Berikut tiga bentuk degrees of comparison.

1. Positive Degree

Positive Degree digunakan untuk menyatakan kesetaraan atau kesamaan sifat/ karakter.

P>> Pola: AS + adjective + AS

Contoh:

  • Arif is as thin as Diah.
  • My house is as big as yours.
  • You are as beautiful as your mother.

2. Comparative Degree

Comparative Degree digunakan untuk membandingkan kualitas dua orang, dua benda, atau dua hal.

Pola:

adjective-ER/R + than ---> untuk satu atau dua suku kata

MORE + adjective + THAN ---> untuk tiga suku kata atau lebih, dan pengecualian untuk 2 suku kata tertentu

Contoh:

  • I am taller than Brian.
  • A cat is nicer than a hamster.
  • Mie Setan is more delicious than instant noodles.
  • Watching funny movies is more interesting than sleeping all day.
  • Dian is more polite than Rara.

3. Superlative Degree

Superlative Degree digunakan untuk menyatakan tingkat paling.

Pola:

THE +  adjective-EST/-ST ---> untuk satu atau dua suku kata

THE + MOST + adjective ---> untuk tiga suku kata atau lebih, dan pengecualian untuk 2 suku kata tertentu

Contoh:

  • Elephant is the biggest animal in the zoo.
  • Jaka is the most diligent student in my school.
  • My mother is the most patient mother in the world.

Selain adjective, adverb juga dapat digunakan dalam degree of comparison. Ciri-cirinya adalah terdapat kata kerjasebelumadverb (kata keterangan).

Contoh:

  • I writeEnglishbetter than I speak.
  • She speaksArabicas well as her mother.
  • You playedthe guitarthe most beautifully among all contestants tonight.

Catatan tambahan

  • Kata 'further' pada soal nomor 9 juga menyatakan lebih jauh. Tetapi kata 'farther' lebih lazim digunakan untuk menunjukkan jarak tertentu dari pembicara.
  • Kata 'better' memiliki dua arti. 'Better' sebagai adjective yang artinya lebih baik. 'Better' sebagai adverb artinya dengan lebih baik.
