How to change Direct Speech into Indirect Speech?

Berikut adalah beberapa poin penting yang harus diingat.

• Dalam indirect speech tidak ada tanda petik (")
• Perhatikan perubahan pronoun (kata ganti) dalam indirect speech
• Ubah tenses menjadi tenses yang lebih lampau. (Ini berlaku jika kita melaporkan sesuatu di lain hari, lain bulan, bahkan lain tahun, dan sudah tidak sesuai kenyataan sekarang)
• Ubah keterangan waktu dan tempat.

tonight ---> that night

yesterday ---> the day before

two days ago ---> tow days before

last week ---> the previous week

next month ---> the following month

tomorrow ---> the next day/ the following day

here ---> there

this, these ---> that, those

Perubahan MODAL

Direct Speech ---> Indirect Speech

can, will, shall, may ---> could, would, should, might

must or have to ---> had to

* Modal should, should, might dalam direct speech TIDAK memerlukan perubahan dalam indirect speech.

* Untuk direct speech yang berupa pertanyaan interogative, sisipkan kata if/whether.

Contoh Direct - Indirect Speech

1. He said, “I am a teacher”

He said (that) he was a teacher

2. She said, “He is watching TV now”

She said (that) he was watching TV then.

3. He said, “They got an accident yesterday”

He said (that) they had got an accident the day before.

4. They said, “We were studying English”

They said (that) they had been studying English.

5. He said, “I have finished my homework”

He said (that) he had finished his homework.

6. He said, “I will buy a new motorcycle”

He said he would buy a new motorcycle.

7. She said, “I must visit my grandma”

She said (that) she had to visit her grandma.

8. He said, “You shall go home now”

He said (that) I should go home then.

9. She said, “You may borrow my umbrella”

She said (that) I might borrow her umbrella.

10. He said, “I can hear your voice clearly from here”

He said (that) he could hear my voice clearly from there.

11. She said, “Put off your shoes!”

She told me to put off my shoes.

12. He said, “Don’t sit on the floor!”

He told me not to sit on the floor.

13. She said, “Don’t be so nervous!”

She advised me not to be nervous.

14. He said, “Be a good boy”

He advised me to be a good boy.

15. She said, "You should study hard."

She advised me that I should study hard.

16. She asked, “What did you do last night?”

She asked (me) what I had done the night before.

17. He asked, “Where will you go?”

He asked where I would go.

18. She asked, “When did my father meet your brother?”

She asked when her father had met my brother.

19. He asked, “Who is the woman”

He asked me who the woman was.

20. She asked, “Why did you do that?”

She asked me why I had done that.

21. She asked, “Do you have a personal computer?”

She asked if I had a personal computer.

22. He asked, “Are you kidding me?”

He asked whether I was kidding him.

23. She asked, “Can I use your pen?”

She asked if she could use my pen.
