What is Character?

Originally from the Greek, kharakter, meaning a mark that could be distinguished from other marks, character in the context of real life refers to the sum of attributes or qualities that describe a person. For example, a person could be described as tall, sensitive, intelligent, and kind, and might be referred to as having "strong character." This term is also used to refer to roles that an actor plays or fictional people in a story or novel.

What Are Character Traits?

Before we begin, I want you to take time to think about your friends, family members, coworkers, or just anyone who you may interact with on a regular basis. Without thinking about their physical appearance, how would you describe them to someone else? Are these people funny? Sincere? Sneaky? Stubborn?

These are just a few descriptive adjectives used to describe someone's personality, and that is exactly what character traits are. They are words used to describe how characters act during certain situations or what kind of people they are. Character traits are sometimes described as good or bad, and everyone has them. You can even identify character traits in characters you see in movies, TV shows, and books!

There are different terms used to describe characters whose traits might change significantly over the course of the story and those whose do not. When a character experiences a lot of growth and subsequent changes to their qualities, this is called a dynamic character. Typically a reader will see these types of changes in the main character of the story. Characters that do not go through significant growth and change are referred to as static characters.

Below are examples of different ways an author can relay the traits of a character through various means. The first examples come from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling, and the second examples come from Towers Falling by Jewel Parker Rhodes.
